Pilates

Having been introduced to Pilates whilst training as a professional Dancer, Aby soon appreciated the benefits of practising Pilates; body awareness, balancing flexibility with strength, stabilizing the core, alignment, rehabilitation.

Aby studied and practised Pilates for three years in a fully equipped Pilates Studio alongside her Dance training, studying Anatomy and Physiology combined with an A-level in Biology gave Aby a strong base to becoming a Pilates teacher.

Aby has continued to practice Pilates and further develop her teaching through completing numerous courses and workshops, gaining a greater understanding outside of dance and assisting people with varying goals and specific limitations.

Pilates is a form of exercise suitable for everyone – men and women of all ages, and fitness levels.

Aby offers classes to suit all levels for beginners to experienced, and understands the need of safe progression and modification to offer exercises for everyone.

Aby ensures each person in her class gradually builds a strong foundation enabling them to perform the exercises correctly and safely; through encouraging concentration & focus, use of breath, flowing sequences, resistance techniques and relaxation.

All Aby’s classes are mat-based, utilizing portable equipment such as Dyna bands, straps, trigger point balls and foam blocks (all provided).

Pilates offers a low-impact conditioning class, a fantastic addition to all exercise programmes and sporting disciplines, using simple effective movements, helping correct imbalances, improve posture, develop core stability, release stress, and prevent injuries.

Pilates is a form of exercise originally developed in the 1920’s by a German gentleman called Joseph Pilates who dedicated his entire life to strengthening the human mind and body.

He developed a system of exercises to be performed on a mat, and accompanied his methods with various pieces of apparatus which accelerated the process.

Pilates is practised world-wide and based on the original six principles concentration, control, centre, flow, precision, and breathing.

Though many similarities to Yoga, Pilates uses exercises (rather than postures) to mainly target the muscles of the deep abdomen (centre) and trunk, develop greater awareness of your own body (switch on correct muscles) through slow, smooth and controlled repetitive movements.

Pilates will improve posture and encourage your movements to become naturally more efficient, develop control and endurance in the entire body, target deep abdominal muscles and surrounding muscles to support the spine, help balance out muscular asymmetries, tones and streamlines the body’s silhouette. Pilates will also improve your general well-being whilst releasing strain from the body.

  • An exercise mat or yoga mat
  • Wear comfortable fitness attire which will allow freedom of movement
  • Bring extra layers – as your body temperature may vary
  • Pilates is typically performed with bare feet but yoga socks are a great alternative

Pilates has been proven to benefit conditions ranging from sports injuries to chronic illnesses.

Please let Aby know if you have an injury/condition so she can offer guidance and direct appropriate exercises but most importantly Aby will let you become your own teacher; listen to how you feel and become aware of what the body is telling you.
